When I look in my custom sound control panel (SoundMax), there is a
section for "Record" and a section for "Playback". Each of those
sections, has an entry for "Microphone". In particular, check the
"Playback" section. Enabling the microphone in the Playback section,
causes any sounds on the microphone, to show up on the computer
speakers.

I appreciate your help. However, I dont get the entry MICROPHONE in the

It depends on your hardware and on your driver.

For example, if you installed the wrong driver, that might be
the reason that certain features don't work. Some people like to
install a RealTek driver, when they can't find the proper driver
for their sound chip.

This is what mine looks like. There is a microphone slider in the Playback
section and one in the Record section. If I unmute the one in the Playback
section, plug in a microphone on my Soundmax, when I speak on the microphone,
I can hear it in the speakers.

What is your sound card ? Or, what computer is this ? I've never really
had any luck fixing sound stuff, but maybe there is an easy answer somewhere.
Try looking for more info, on your specific sound chip.

R.click the speaker by the clock, select "open volume control",options,
properties,select "playback",select line-in,or the micophone-in port,adjust

Tnks Andrew: I selected line-in and it does not work. The option
microphone-in port is not available. I think this is my problem. to get this
option in the menu open - volume control - options - properties - playback .
Any idea on how to introduce the microphone-in port to this menu.
Really appreciate yr help

We still don't know anything about your computer. What kind
of computer is it ? Is the sound on the motherboard or a separate
sound card ?

Dear Paul: It is an HP 550 notebook. Sound is through the motherboard, I
have no separate sound card. Will you advise to buy one, type USB?

I found some drivers here for HP 550 notebook. The sound chip appears to be
AD1981HD. The trade name is SoundMax from Analog Devices. (This link should all
be one line pasted into your browser. My news server won't let me post the link
as a single long line.)

prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3764998&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2095

There is a driver package for WinXP.

You should be seeing the same kind of control panel, that I have
on my computer here. I have a different CODEC (AD1988B), but
the design of the CODEC follows a common theme. There are some
input ports, that can be looped to the main Line-Out. And
that should allow a microphone to be heard in the speakers.
(What I cannot tell, from a diagram like this, is how they decided to
connect those interfaces, to jacks on your computer.)

http://www.analog.com/static/imported-files/data_sheets/AD1981HD.pdf

I think you should have the same capability as I have.

Do you have an icon in the tray, for SoundMax ? This is the
icon I see in my tray, after the driver is installed.

In this example, the Microphone has a red dot below the slider in
the Playback section. You need to click that, to "unmute" the
path. Clicking the red dot, should result in microphone sounds
being played through whatever you have for a speaker.

Weird. On my computer, this link takes me to the HP 550 laptop download page.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...sId=3764998&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2095

If I test this one, I get a 7,204,752 byte file "sp39428.exe" .

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp39001-39500/sp39428.exe

If I shorten that link, I get to see all the files available.

"Index of ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp39001-39500/"

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp39001-39500

Soundmax has two different icons. The old icon was a blue triangle on the
control panel idon. The new one has some wavy lines, like this one.

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/img/soundmaxicon.jpg

Try to find the right driver for your HP 550 and install it !
HP offers an audio driver for WinXP.
