microphone sound is distorted

Hi everyone
My mic always worked just fine but for awhile now, whenever I record from it or go into a voice-supported chat (regardless of what program I am using - it always sounds the same) there is a significant amount of distortion. There's almost like a heart-beat thump and... this sounds weird to me... when I move my mouse, you can hear almost like a low dulling sound. When I stop my mouse, the sound stops. Now this is only when I have the mic volume on. I don't, however, need to be recording it. Basically if I have it unmuted, then I'll constantly hear my mouse movements. I made sure everything was plugged in OK and made sure the mic was as far away from the speakers as possible. It seems like I have covered every aspect. I thought it may be the mic so I tried others but still, so annoying! I spoke with a friend about it and he mentioned that maybe I needed to update my sound driver because there might be some confliction, but that didn't seem to help at all. Does anyone have any ideas
Thanks so much
Cashmere

You seem to have covered the possibilities. Have you checked your
microphone volume settings? They may have gotten accidentally bumped up too
high. If I fiddle with my mike volume I can get the effects you mention.
With the volume at about 20% there is no feedback, but go up to 30% to 40%
and you have to hit the mute button quickly. Take a look at the volume
settings, maybe you'll get lucky.

Hi Kevin
Yes, I messed around with the volume settings. But what happens then is my voice is extremely low, to the point that no one can really hear me. So in order to be heard, I have to put the volume up pretty high. Even with the volume fairly low I can still barely hear the distortion, but it obviously gets worse the higher my volume is. That's one thing I was hoping - that my volume settings were just off. Ahhh! It seems like such a simple device, yet I have all this trouble with it.
Thanks

Cashmere, I feel your pain. I have done everything with my mic/speakers/settings etc besides throw them out onto the lawn. Is there anybody with a solution
