Microphone recording playback

I just added a microphone headset to my computer. I finally got the
microphone to work, and can record my voice as well as talk to my friend
through the internet (like a phone call). However, I still have one problem.
When I playback my recording a squeal can be heard in the background behind
my voice, also when I talk to my friend he can hear the same squeal. Please
keep in mind that I am novice level 1 as far as computer stuff. I assume
that I have to adjust something somewhere, but I have absolutely no idea what
- I am completely lost. Could someone please help me to get rid of the
squeal???? I have Windows XP. Thank you very much, M

Turn down the other speakers when you use the headset. The squeel you hear is
caused by a 'feedback loop' (in the mic, out the speaker, in the mic, out the
speaker, round and round.)

I'm not sure how to do that. I know you're right, I just don't know how to
do that. If I turn down volumes in volume control, the volume of my voice
goes down as well. Please tell me where I turn down the other speakers.
Thank you, M

One solution... use headphones.

You may have an available plug on your sound card called 'line out', this has
a separate volume slider available. Put the headphones jack in it.

start/run, type sndvol32, Options menu, run down scrolling list of sound
devices and put a checkmark in 'line out', then OK. This should give you a
dialog with sliders for both speaker, and line out (even a mute checkbox for
the speakers that would not mute the line out.)

Thank you very much for you help, I really appreciative your time and
knowledge. I do have 2 black plugs on the back of my computer marked "mic"
and "spk". They are right next to 2 phone jacks marked "phone" and "line".
I assumer these are the plugs you are referring to. I will try what you have
suggested, and let you know how I make out. Again, I am very grateful to you
for your help. Thank you yet again, M

I'm not having any luck. I got to the options menu, there I have choices for
playback and recording. Under recording I don't have a 'line out', only a
'line in'. I plugged my headphones into the other 2 jacks that I mentioned
in my previous reply, tried checking 'line in', but the microphone doesn't
record. I also can't hear any sound in my headphones. I guess I'm doing
something wrong. I'm asking for your help again, I'm lost again. Thank you
so much, M

I'm not having any luck. In the options menu I have no 'line out', only
'line in' for both recording and playback. I plugged my headphones in the
jacks I mentioned in my previous reply, and checked 'line in' since there was
no other choice. It won't record, and I can't hear anything in my
headphones. I guess I'm doing something wrong. I'm asking you again for
your help. I'm lost again. Thank you, M
