Microphone quit working

I was trying to record some lines today, when my microphone quit working. It
has worked before, but now my computer won't even recognise I've plugged it
in!! How do I get it to work again?

Control Panel>>Hardware and Sound>> Sound>> Manage Audio
Devices>>Recording>>Place the cursor on the microphone is question,
highlight it, Press Set as Default>> Configure>> Set up Microphone>> Make a
selection (Desktop vs. Headphone)>> Next>>Dictate into the mic.
