Assuming that the microphone is working properly (and if it has
an on/off switch that it is actually "on"), then make sure that
the microphone is plugged into the right port and that this port
has been properly configured. Double-check against the motherboard
manual that this has been done. Next, go into the audio mixer to
make that the microphone input and audio output are really enabled.
If there is no sound, even after running a test of the inputs and
output, then the sound card or sound chip could well be defunct.

i had already tsted the mic in my guitar amp and it worked fine, i don't have
a clue how to double check the inputs and outputs with the motherboard, so if
someone could spell that out for me it would be great.
i don't see how that could be a problem though as it used to work!
where is the audio mixer too! can't find anything in sound and audio devices
that would help me
cheers

i can't see it being a sound card problem , as i can get sound out, through
my stereo, just can't get it in. unless its the port thats knackered but i
don't see how that could be

double click on the speaker icon on lower right taskbar and make sure your
mic is not set to mute. If you have no speaker icon go to control
panel/sounds audio devices/ and check the box that says place volume icon in
the taskbar and retry.

Same problem. Cannot record using my Mic since January. The Mic continues to
work fine on other devices. The Language tests fail as well, "cannot detect
voice".

I am using a Dell 8200, xp sp2, Creative Sound Blaster Live. The last time
I was able to use the mic to record was 3 months ago. Before this I was able
to use my mic to record using Windows Movie Maker, Windows Sound Recorder,
and Creative Recorder. I thought perhaps this may have been due to a some
recent update that caused a conflict. I have scoured the Creative site as
well to no avail, I remain both clueless and speachless. MM

From the Start button, choose help and support, and search for the two words
sound recorder. You should see items to 'to set up a microphone' as well
as others. One of them should include instructions for testing and
troubleshooting a micropone. I'm not sure, but perhaps there is an option
somewhere to mute the microphone which may need to be unchecked.
