mht file problems

I often save web pages as .mht files for future reference. (I'm a writer.) I
create them on my primary computer but write the files to another computer
that I use as a file and print server via a WinXP workgroup network.

1. When I later read these mht files from the computer that created them
(essentially reversing the workflow) all is well, but
2. If I try to read any of the mht files from the file server, I get a "Page
Cannot be Displayed" error with an "Invalid Synatx error" title on the banner.
3. If I write the file to a DVD, load the DVD onto the primary computer and
try to read it, I get the same error.

It seems as if the only way I can read an mht is by reversing the workflow
*exectly*. What can I do to fix this?

Both computers are Dell machines of recent vintage running WinXP Pro and IE
6.0.29. The machines are connected via a hub using a workgroup sharing
resources. All this is set up at my house. Any ideas?

To read a mht file, IE need components of OE or
Outlook. So if PC dont have OE/O, it wont work.

Good idea. The computer that won't read the mht files does have Outlook
Express installed, but not Outlook. I'm not using OE on that computer, but I
checked and it's there. Any suggestions?

I went to MS TS & here's what they said in 2000:

Subject: "Setup: problem viewing/saving mht files in
IE5.5 after instal WMe"
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 07:11:33 -0700

Hello Larry,

Based on my experience, this behavior can occur if you
haven¡¯t install
Outlook Express, or your Outlook Express is damaged. So
please install
Outlook Express into your system. Outlook Express 5.5
is a component of
Internet Explorer 5.5. You can install the latest
version of IE5.5 into
your system to resolve this issue.

You can download a new IE 5.5 from the Microsoft web
site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm>

I'd do repair/reinstall of IE6 to get OE OK on 'bad' pc
or go to MS directly. I always try here 1st so that
wasnt much help in 2000! OR
If u dont need links/pics to work, save as HTML. If u
do, try save as web page. U can also max IE window &
take a snapshot ($0 software 4 this)

So I gave u some alternatives. Best I can do.

How are you referring to these files? Sounds like they are network files?
Have you tried attaching drives instead? (I'm thinking that there
could be different syntax involved for two different types of references
and only local file references may be supported properly.)

BTW a newsgroup which specializes in networking for your OS
may have a better understanding of the issues involved.

Good luck

Ned,

It seems a mhtml: protocol problem. Make sure your mhtml protocol is
associated with OE.
If you often save web pages like me. Give MixBrowser a try. It helps me
a lot.
