For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

.

To get rid of nasty pop ups, in eight simple steps,
disable the "Messenger Service"

1) Click Start button (lower left hand corner of screen)
2) Click Run option from menu (this will make a dialogue
box pop up)
3) Type in "services.msc" and click OK to bring up a list
of services using your system.
4) Scroll down the long list to find to "Messenger" the
program that is the source of the offending pop-ups!
5) Click to select "Messenger" and hit enter to
open "Messenger Properties"
6) In the middle of the box, under "startup type"
select "disabled" from the pull down menu.
7) If the "Service Status" panel (under start up type) is
accessable, click on "stop"
8) Hit "apply" at the bottom of the screen, then "ok" and
the messages are gone forever!

This is true, but Gary is right. It just covers one problem and not the
main one.
You can download a free firewall from www.zonealarm.com.

It is a pain until you get it configured right, but after that works good,
is free, and blocks unwanted traffic.

I'd say get a firewall and antivirus software. Especially get this if you
have a cable modem or DSL and are always connected. If so you are a sitting
duck.

Waiting for the blaster worm or such to get you. Be sure to get the patch
that protects against the blaster worm. it is bad.
Also I saw the Yaha worm and it is hard to get rid of.
