Messenger Audio Problem with XP

Eric M

When I try to connect with audio under MSN Messenger 6.1
to another user the follwing happens:

My computer (XP Pro) says "connecting ...." and their
computer says that we are already connected. However, I
cannot hear them nor can they hear me. A short time
after that, messenger says that the conversation has
ended even though it seems I've never connected to the
other person.

I have a linksys router and SP1 for XP.

Does anyone have a idea how I can get audio under
messenger?

By the way, the video works fine.

Thank you,
Eric

What model of router? Usually you have to forward a bunch of ports in the
router to get all that stuff to work. You log into the router and find the
section that lets you forward ports and type in a port range and the IP
address of your computer.

Somone claims opening up these ports will work, but I have never tried it:

389
1503
1720-1731
65534-65535
1024

The easy way is to forward all ports or if there is a place for a DMZ or
Default Server that will forward all incomming connection to it. Be aware
that if you are enjoying the firewall benefit of your router, you will lose
that benifit.

Hmmm now I see that you have to have a UPnP router for messenger 6.0. I hope
your Linksys is one of those.

The linksys model is BEFW11S4V2. It does have UPnP. Do
you know where in the config utility I'd find to setup
the port forwarding?

Thank you for your help.

First, setting up a default computer to forward all ports to should still
work on a non UPnP router, it's just that you can only use one computer at a
time to do it this way.

Now thats out of the way, GREAT you have UPnP! That means it should
automatically "discover" ports to forward dynamically and you don't have to
statically open up any ports and it allows more than one computer on your
router to use messenger audio/video.

Ok here is what you do:

Open up Internet Explorer and go to your router configuration by going here:
http://192.168.1.1

Now you will get a Username/Password popup. If you have never set the
password before, leave the User Name empty and type admin into the password
field. That should get you in.

Go to the password tab and there is a radio button to enable Upnp Services.
I recommend you change your password to something besides admin.

It should work now!

P.S. all of this is in the manual.

You need to install UPnP in Windows XP too.

1.Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
4. In the Components list, click Networking Services, and then click
Details.
5. Select the Universal Plug and Play check box, and then click OK.
6. Click Next, and then click Finish.
