I am need of some help - - & or advice.
I downloaded a program (ABEXO free registry cleaner---non Microsoft) used
it as it was free, uninstalled it after use.Now when I start my computer I get
this message:-
The feature that you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable
disk that is not available.
Insert the scan disk & click OK.

Then when I try to exit this message I get another message telling me
The path 1(one) cannot be found.Verify that you have access to this location
& try again to find the installation package "SCAN MSI" in a folder from
which you can install the product scan.

The Windows Installer cannot continue.

Could some PLEASE tell me how to rid this/these messages

System Restore to a point prior to your using the registry cleaner...
and don't use a registry cleaner again.

The most effective way to repair the damage done by a registry
"cleaner" is to perform a repair installation of WinXP. That should
fixed most of the problems; if not, format the hard drive and start afresh.

Why did you use the registry "cleaner" in the first place? What
specific problems were you *actually experiencing* (not some snake oil
program's bogus listing of imaginary problems)?

If you do have a problem that is rooted in the registry, it would
be far better to simply edit (after backing up, of course) only the
specific key(s) and/or value(s) that are causing the problem. After
all, why use a chainsaw when a scalpel will do the job? Additionally,
the manually changing of one or two registry entries is far less likely
to have the dire consequences of allowing an automated product to make
multiple changes simultaneously.

The registry contains all of the operating system's "knowledge" of
the computer's hardware devices, installed software, the location of the
device drivers, and the computer's configuration. A misstep in the
registry can have severe consequences. One should not even turning
loose a poorly understood automated "cleaner," unless he is fully
confident that he knows *exactly* what is going to happen as a result of
each and every change. Having seen the results of inexperienced people
using automated registry "cleaners," I can only advise all but the most
experienced computer technicians (and/or hobbyists) to avoid them all.
Experience has shown me that such tools simply are not safe in the hands
of the inexperienced user.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, then you also lack the knowledge and
experience to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner,
no matter how safe they claim to be.

Further, no one has ever demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that the
use of an automated registry cleaner, particularly by an untrained,
inexperienced computer user, does any real good. There's certainly been
no empirical evidence offered to demonstrate that the use of such
products to "clean" WinXP's registry improves a computer's performance
or stability.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner. I strongly
encourage others to acquire the knowledge, as well.

I have been recieving messages telling me that there is/was a problem in
the registry.I downloaded the "free" Reg cleaner,"thinking" that it may ahve
cured this problem;it did cure it alright,so much so that this message just
keeps appearing.

The other suggestion that you mentioned maybe the only way out, although I
did not really want to go down that road.
I did send an email to ABEXO,but, like all other companies they have not seem
fit to reply.
In their "little" statement ,when downloaded, they say that they take NO
resposability for any changes made & or lost information.

If you were receiving "messages" urging you to buy/download something, then
your computer was infected with some variant of the Smitfraud trojan. At
this point (since I can't see your computer) I suggest you back up your
data and do a clean install.

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows - What
you will need on-hand

If you really want to try and clean up the machine (not recommended), then
you may need to fix your Windows Installer problems first:

Resolving problems with the Windows installer -
http://www.rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Installation
Windows Installer Fix (Line 94) -
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Clean Up MSI (Windows Installer) -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Then go through the preparatory steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then do the specific removal steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus AVG Anti-Spyware
(formerly Ewido - http://www.ewido.net/en/) and follow instructions to do
all scans in Safe Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). The only alternative to going
through the malware removal tediously and systematically, probably with
online help from an HJT forum, and taking the machine to a real
professional is to back up your data and do a clean install of Windows.
It's your call. Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at
removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested
that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all your data backed up
before you take the machine into a shop.

I recognice the flow of messages that keep popping up.
So I did what Malke suggested and reformatted my harddisk and did a clean
install of XP PRO. Of course this should resolve the problem but it DOES NOT.
While I am writing this I have been disturbed by TWO messages that state that
MICROSOFT has detected CRITICAL SISTEM ERRORS.
Yesterday after reformatting the harddisk and reinstalling XP PRO everything
was OK but then I connected internet and everything began again.
Is this eventually a complot between the 17 sites that offer their register
cleaners? If this is true then we are talking about SPAM, hackers, ...
What can I do?
PLEASE HELP.

What type of anti malware protection is installed on the system? Is a
firewall active before going online?

hello Ted,

to my knowledge, windows
doesn't tell you that there is
a problem with it's registry.

if you check your error log, you will find
those so-called system errors, that's if you
actually have any.

so it seems that you simply contracted
a nagging message from a download that
would eventually have you download
another corrupted program, then another, etc.....

you haven't provided much information however
i don't think that what little you have
mentioned would have warranted a
format of the harddisk.

You've multiposted this to several newsgroups and you've gotten advice in
several places, from me and from others. Because it's in several places,
each person trying to help you hasn't seen what the others have posted, and
the result is a big confused mess. this is a perfect answer of why you
should *never* multipost. It screws up those trying to help you, and the
result is that the help you get is poorer than it should be.

I'll tell you one more time. Turn on your firewall!
