Please wait while Windows configures scan message after boot

Every time I boot, I see this message "Please wait while Windows configures
scan" followed by this prompt "The feature you are trying to use is on a
CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the "Scan" disk
and click OK." There is a list box below that says "Use source" with "1" in
the box and no other items on the list. I cannot populate Add/Remove Programs
in control panel to try to uninstall whatever this program is. Any ideas? The
only workaround I have now is to Ctrl-Alt-Del and stop this pop-up window.

It suggested you press "1" to "Use Source". Have you tried that?

Click Start, Run, type REGEDIT, click OK. Press the Home key, press F3,
type RUNONCE into the search pane. Click "Find Next", and when located,
scroll through the entries in the r-h pane looking for "SCAN". If
found, delete that entry. Press F3 to continue the search.

You can click File, Export, and save the entry to the Desktop. If you
remove it and there's a problem, double-click the .reg file you exported
to the Desktop and it'll be added to the registry again. You can create
a restore point before editing the registry too.

If you find such an entry and are not sure what to delete, post to this
thread with what you found, both in the left and the right pane. The
open key in the left pane, the entry in the right pane to be more precise.

I actually went into msconfig and isolated the file that was hanging
everything up. It was a file named hpqtra08.exe which runs the Hewlett
Packard Digital Imaging Monitor for the HP OfficeJet 5620 All-in-One
sanner/printer/fax. This file does not need to run at startup as it can be
manually run when needed or automatically initalized by the printer as
needed. I just kept checking and unchecking programs from the Startup tab
until I found the culprit. As soon as I unchecked it, my system booted fine,
Add/Remove Programs initialized fine, and all was well.

That's great news~ Thanks for the report.

You're welcome. I have a question regarding your previous answer. When you
recommended this "Press the Home key, press F3, type RUNONCE into the search
pane." what was the reason for serchng for RUNONCE?

I thought some software was trying to do a final install step, but
couldn't access the drive where it expected to find the medium.
Removing the utility from the Runonce key might've prevented it from
trying to continue the install.

Of course, it could have been in a Run key.. that search would've been
the next step, and that's where you would probably have found
"hpqtra08.exe".
