Message compacting pop up when exiting WM

Every time I exit Windows Mail a pop up says: Windows Mail can compact the
message store. This may take up to a few minutes. I can click on OK or Cancel.
I've always cancelled.
First: What does it mean? Does it put the emails in a separate Zip file or
what
happens?
Second: How can I disable the pop up? It must not technically be considered a
pop up, because they are disabled already on this computer. Anyway it appears
every time I exit wm. Thanks

The messages already exist as separate .eml files, and aren't changed by
compacting. Compacting goes through the database file used for locating
the message files, and removes the entries for deleted messages, which
can help speed up finding messages in the future. If you click on OK,
then it will shut up until you close the Windows Mail program for another
certain number of times, usually 100 times.

Robert: Thank you very much. Your information was very helpful. I clicked OK,
in about 5 seconds the progress bar filled. Hope I don't see the message again
for a while.

It produces a new version of the index file for the messages, with entries
for
completely deleted messages removed. This allows Windows Mail to run
faster.

The email messages that haven't been completely deleted stay in separate
..eml files, and this isn't affected by compacting.

By default, allowing it to compact the database suppresses this message
until you have closed the Windows Mail program another 100 times.

This has been a concern of mine also...and I've found all ans here helful.
My question is, does this apply to all email sent whether from my Windows
Mail acct. or does it include all others such as Yahoo! or gmail?
Thanks.

It applies to all email accessed by that user through your Windows Mail
program. I haven't heard of a Windows Mail account; Windows Mail
is a program for accessing various types of accounts.

Gmail and Yahoo are often accessed through your web browser instead
of through Windows Mail; if you do only this for those accounts, then the
compaction in Windows Mail will not apply to those accounts.

I came across this problem with WM for the first time and your post was
helpful. Thank you.

In window mail. click toos, options, advanced, maintenance, then uncheck the
box that says compact database. This will stop the dialog from showing up
after you close windows mail.

That's like taking the battery out of your smoke detector because it
gives too many alarms...

It is best to let the compaction complete. Once it finishes, it won't bother
you again for a long time. It does not affect messages. It just removes
dead space from the message store (database).

It leaves the message files alone, but packs an index file showing what
message
is in which file by producing a new index file with the entries for the
thoroughly
deleted messages taken out.

By default, it will start asking for permission to do this as soon as you
have
closed down the program 100 times, and will continue to ask for this every
time you close down the program until you approve this compaction. It
will then start the count over.
