compacting in windows mail

seniorcit42

when I exit from windows mail, it asks me if i want to "compact the messages
store" I click on o.k. and it replies that "windows mail is in use" and then
closes down. Im then left with 5 files on my screen that I have to delete.
They are named edb, edb0001, edb.chk, edbres000 and edbres0000.
How do I get the compacting to work properly.
My skills are just above the basic level.

I can't answer your question Seniorcit42, but I can confirm that your
problem does exist. I too have never been able to compact windows mail or,
for that matter, windows live mail. I assume it is a bug that has not been,
so far, rectified. To be honest I've got to the stage now that when the
message pops up I just cancel it because I know that nothing is going to
happen.

EDB? Email Database?

Could this be due to file corruption as in OE?

I mean if one of the files is flagged as open then "Mail is still open",
a typically accurate but vague MS error message...

Of course it's not going to be the file you expect :)
