Message: Changes have been made that affect the global template...

Word 2002

I turned on the setting to "Prompt to save Normal template". Now, whenever
I quit Word, I get the message that "Changes have been made that affect the
global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?". I get
the message whether or not I've actually made any changes - for instance, if
I open Word, then immediately quit, I still get the message.

I'm working with the default normal template, with only two changes - I
turned on the prompting, and I changed the file location for templates.

What's going on here? Why does Word think there's a change to the template
every time I open it?

TIA.

This is usually caused by a poorly written add-in that makes changes to
toolbars every time it loads. One of the worst is the Microsoft Works Suite
Add-in for Word, which you don't need if you have Word as part of Works but
are running it freestanding (not launching it from the Works Task Launcher).
Other culprits are the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus, and add-ins from
WinFax, Stamps.com, etc.

Suzanne,

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have any of those add-ins, or any add-ins, in fact. (Verified by
looking at Tools/Templates & Add-ins). Just my custom toolbar with a
collection of buttons from "customize toolbars".

Any thing else I should look at?

Suzanne,

Right. I have never installed Norton or Works. Checked the com add-ins as
per the MVPS page, and although there are 2 add-ins listed there, none are
checked. The two that are there are Microsoft Word East European Fonts and
Web Page Wizard.

There are no global templates listed.

I'm out of ideas, then. You might try posting in word.application.errors,
where your message might be seen by more knowledgeable users.

Jeremy,

Since you changed the file location for templates, that may be the problem.
Check to see if Normal.dot resides in the location specified for User Templates
(first make sure you have viewing of hidden files and folders enabled in
Explorer). We've had this same thing happen because the path for templates was
to a network location that the user didn't have write rights to.

Let me know it this is what's going on. If you need more help let me know.

I keep getting this message every time I close out of the last document in Word. It doesn't matter if I say yes or no, it'll close fine, and reopen fine, but display the error message again the next time. It's just annoying, not really a problem.
