Word has a _lot_ of toolbars. Double check that there is no other
shortcut
key assigned using menu names in a custom toolbar.
With word closed,
Try Start > Run > winword.exe /a
If it works for you there, it is some customization being implemented
on
your Word. (A start for trouble-shooting.) A next step would be
renaming
normal.dot to see if the problem is there.

I tried all of this... worthwhile info, but unfortunately didn't work.
The
Alt+A shows currently [unassigned]. The "a" is still underlined in
the
menu
bar. There is no duplicate. More help please?

I'm not sure if any of this will actually cover your problem - using
a
secondary accelerator simply closing the popup seems an odd symptom,
but
if
it's any help ....
There are (at least) three ways in which the Alt+a combination can be
disabled.
There are two types of 'shortcut' keys - accelerators and hot keys.
Combinations of Alt and a letter are used for accelerators - e.g.
Alt+a
for
Table - indicated by the underlined a in the menu.
Combinations using other modifier keys (such as Ctrl) are normally
used
for
keyboard customizations (hotkeys).
It is however possible to use Alt as a modifier key when customizing
the
keyboard and this will override use of the key combination as an
accelerator
key - so if someone has defined Alt+a to some other purpose you could
have a
problem. To check this ...
Tools > Customize > Keyboard
Put the cursor in the "Press new shortcut key" text box
Press Alt+a
Below the box (with the legend "currently assigned to") it should
show
the current assignment of the key; it should say "[unassigned]"
(Press Close and Close to get out)
Another way to remove an acceleator key is to change the text of the
menu
item - is the a still underlined in Table? If not then ...
Tools > Customize
Right click on Table and change the Name back to T&able
A third way to (almost) disable accelerators is to have duplicates -
is
there another item on the menu bar which also has an underlined a? If
so,
remove it or change it as described above.

I use a LOT of shortcut keys. The shortcut key Alt+A that used to
open &
drop down the Table list on the menu bar is all of a sudden not
working.
I
have tried everything I can think of. Our IT dept is not able to
help
thus
far. If I open the Table list with the mouse, then try to use any
of
the
shortcuts, such as the D for delete, it will close the Table
dropdown
window.
I must use a mouse for anything on this particular Table menu.
Any
suggestions as to how to get the shortcuts back? I have already
used
Help
to
try and reset the keyboard shortcut, but it is already set to
default
on
that
particular one, and there is nothing to reset. Getting frustrated,
and
making lots of errors because I'm used to using shorcuts on the
fly.
Help
please??
