I,m trying to upgrade my HP from 384 Mb ram to 512 Mb but when I remove the
128 Mb module and replace it with a 256 Mb module, the pc just keeps
rebooting. I,ve tried different 256Mb modules and all seem to work fine
alone or with the 128Mb module. But when I put 2 - 256 Mb together at the
same time I get a reboot and then the "last good configuration" screen. I
know about putting the larger newer modules in the first bank. I know the
model # can hold 512 Mb max.

Did you buy both 256MB modules at the same time from the same supplier
and same lot? XP is picky on memory matching.

If the model is a few years old and has four slots for memory modules, chances are that it can only address four 128MB memory modules for a total of 512MB RAM.

Many ram cards are sensitive to who they sleep with.
