Memory Read Error.

B

Bubba

When I hit certain web sites (no all), I get the infamous "unable to read
memory location xxxxxxxx, click OK to kill, cancel to debug etc.

I've ran a repair on IE6 (sfc /scannow) to no avail.

Nothing has been added or changed on this system.

The web sites that cause the error changes from time to time, so it doesnt
appear to be a specific web site.

Does anyone have any ideas, I really don't want to go through the time to
install Firefox, but if necessary then that's the route I'll go.

Thanks.

No malware, viruses etc. The system is absolutley clean and has been for
over a year - I'm quite diligent about this.

I think I fixed the problem however. There were 3 MS updates that I
apparently HID. I installed them and have not had any problems - YET.

Thanks.

WOW, lots of stuff.

So, to re-iterate - "My machine is (and always has been) clean". This is a
high end mutli-media development system and I make it a habit of checking
for "Nasties" three times a day.

The problem was (apparently) fixed with one of the MS updates I installed
the other day. I say apparently, because I know longer have problems. Now,
it may be coincedental that I downloaded and installed these updates
(perhaps in conjuction with the IE repair that I ran).

As for moving ram about - I don't see how after a year this would be an
issue. Being a 25 year MS and Systems Eng vet, I would have suspected this
if this were a relatively new system.

My system is Kaspersky Anti-Virus PRo, Ad-Aware Pro, Spybot scanned three
times daily (morning, noon, night kinda thing). They found nothing at all.
BTW: These are all licenced tools, so none of the "Free Ware Limited"
versions. I have a great deal of trust in these bad boys - I hope it doesn't
get misplaced.

I did run your suggested ON-Line scan (Sophos) and it reported 33 viruses
and malware items. My Kaspersy (which I use religously and recommend to my
clients) found nothing - at all. It has been my experience that "Free On
Line" scans will always find something, trick of the trade to sell their
products. Also, I have a tool that I wrote last year that will scan my hard
disks for ALL specified files (regardless of their attributes and/or
location such as System Restore directories) and when I ran this tool to
locate the 33 items that Sophos reported, it found nothing. I've sent an
email to those folks suggesting that their on-line scan may not work as
advertised along with my results of the hard disk search. Just a heads up
here.

I did find your links to be helpful (particularly the msdiag tool). I thank
you for those links and items and will keep them in my tool kit of
referrences.

Thanks Nass :) :) :)

Hey Nass. I did email Sophos with the details of their on line scan. I rec'd
an email today wherein they indicated that there was a problem (interum)
with their database.

It has been addressed and fixed. I ran a scan an hour ago and now all seems
to be ok.

As mentioned below, I do use Kaspersky (v6.x). Most excellent piece of
software, and I always recommend it to my clients.

Cheers :)

I believe the culprit was found. I purchased X-Setup 9.0.100 about a week
ago (to "TWEAK" XP). Bad boy. I rec'd several emails from people that had
similar problems and they all suggested removing X-Setup.

Well, I did so and now the problem is gone. It may be coincidental, but to
play it safe I sent an email to XQDS support group and they are checking
into it.

Also, I re-installed it and the problem(s) came back. Now it's nuked and
I'll see what the folks at XQDS have to say.

Cheers to all :)

Hi Bubba,
Thanks for your valuable Info.
It is better to alert or contact the vendor to get better support and let
them know your findings as it will be appreciated and helpful for both users
and vendor alike.
Glad you got the culprit in this scenario and sharing your findings with us.
Good luck.

Hey to all.

XQDS has an update to X-Setup (it's actually just a fix for the current
release, but it appears to be fine). If anyone is using it, get this updated
version: X-Setup 9.0.100. It's available as a "Free - ie TRIAL" download or
a free update to registered users.

Their web site has more here:
http://www.x-setup.net/downloads/home.asp?lang=EN

What (apparently) was the problem is in the download load site that I
originally downloaded and purchased it from.

When/if you download this, go to the app and follow these steps:

1) Right Click on the installer app,
2) Click on the Version Tab,
3) in the "Comments portion", it MUST say: This installation was built with
Inno Setup: http://www.innosetup.com.,
4) Company information MUST say: XQDC Ltd.

Apparently, when the app installs it generates a checksum of the original
installer, then uses this checksum periodically to ensure that the app has
not been compromised. And of course, I downloaded an update last week tot he
flavor that I had originally installed (X-setup build #: 9.0.86) and that's
when things went wonky.

At least that's what their tech support people say. No reason to doubt.

This was the information that we used to determine that the app may have
been faulty. My comments section (in my original download) was blank. CLUE -
yes???

I found them to be exceptional in terms of support and service.

I installed this on 9-13-07 at 9:45 pm and have not had a problem at all.

Not that two days is sufficient testing, but so far so good.

Cheers to all :)
