URL access gives "application not found" error

I just received and laptop containing WinXP home that had firefox installed.
After uninstalling firefox and an aborted attempt to load IE7, I have wound
up with a corrupted IE6 that gives me an error dialog box stating
"application not found" followed by a single OK button. I get this error when
I try to go to any internet site and so I'm unable to updated WinXP or do and
internet diagnostics.

What do I have to do to get my IE 6 working again so I can get to the web?

If you just received the laptop I suggest using the Manufacturer's Restore
disk.
