Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site

Every time I try to open certain sites I get the error message:

"Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site
(website URL)
Operation aborted"

Other's using IE7 and Firefox aren't having this problem, but I can't figure
out what is causing it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I'm aware that this is most likely a problem with the site, but I want to
know the problem nontheless because I can contact the person running the site
and would like to help her solve the problem.

I'd seen that bug already, and that's what I thought it was at first, but
the bug you mentioned is also present in IE7 (according to the page you
linked to). I don't understand why it's only happening in IE6. Is there
anything else that could be causing the problem?

Others on the same machine? If not, you have no proof that that there
is connectivity to that site using your machine. E.g. it might not be an IE
problem but a networking problem. Normally I would cross-post this
to a networking newsgroup for you but you neglected to disclose your OS
and you are posting through the web interface which makes even an inference
about your OS impossible.

Start from first principles and make sure that your DNS is working.
E.g. in NTx nslookup or ping -n 1 are good for that.
Then test using either a different browser or telnet 80 that you have
connectivity to the site's HTTP server.
