Memory problems

I just upgraded my computer to WinXP Pro, and ran into the problem of not having enough memory. Although I've read
that 256MB of RAM is enough, apparently it was not. I went up to 448MB yesterday and I'm still having problems. My problems include the low memory error messages, windows not showing up on the taskbar, and certain programs that use Java not being able to be used. I've adjusted the virtual memory with a minimum of the recommended 670MB and a maximum of 768MB. What can I do to get my computer to work properly

First, go back and reset the virtual memory and select to let the system
handle the virtual memory.

I've been doing that for weeks, with no results.

What are the specific error messages you are seeing? Here are some links
that may help.

Specifically, when I try to open Windows Media Player, it says "can't perform function, low memory". Other programs don't even go through the trouble of telling me that much. When I try to run a One-Button Scan with Norton Systemworks, it says none of the scanners will load. Back when I was able to get onto the internet, sites using Java would not work at all.

Norton 2004? That *is* a virus.

Check your system for advertising spyware. Download, install, update
and run AdAware (free) from http://www.lavasoft.de Pretty much
everything that AdAware identifies can and should be removed.

Also get a second opinion on a possible virus by doing a free online
scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com or by downloading and running
Stinger (free) from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

p.s. the only reference I could find to your "can't perform function,
low memory" message was with respect to Windows Media Player 7.1 and
that user ended up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling
everything, which did resolve the problem.
