======= orig message =======

I have been experiencing random crashes, freezes and especially error
messages for a while now.
I ran and reran updated versions of ad-aware, spybot, Norton, hijack this,
a million times, defragged and did a couple of files clean-ups to no avail.
I posted my problems on various boards and nobody that helped did fix it
(Thanks still to these kind people) so I used the last resort and
reinstalled XP pro.
Well after reinstall, problems are still here but worse, upon reinstalling
my first program which is the sygate firewall,I got my first error message
telling me the program had to shut down.
Following that I was told that I was low on virtual memory.
Programs crawl to open or don't open at all, the screen freezes often and
requires a restart.
It took me 5 tries to type what you are reading now in notepad and save it
to the desktop for easy copy and paste while online posting for help.
Since i have reinstalled XP and problems persist, I have ruled out
software or virus problems and would think a piece of hardware is
failing.Is it a memory stick?
Is the HD about to crash? Something else?Is there a way to test things by
myself?
Could I fix the problem myself or do I have to bring the PC for repair?
(Another "Virtual memory too low" just poped up as I typed this.)

========================

When XP HOME was first installed on this PC, using good 256Mb memory that
worked fine with '98, it was a disaster of similar proportions.

Swapping in a 512Mb high-quality single chip solved it - immediately.
Worth a test. Report results here.
