RE: MEMORY DUMPS, Stop: 0x000000008E, BSOD

Hello Crime Fighters…

Here is what I am experiencing

1) Power computer, using Win XP Pro
2) Get to user login and enter pw information to launch Windows
3) Result =MEMORY DUMPS, Stop: 0x000000008E, BSOD
Specifics:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
What the Dump of physical memory message reads:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in
the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver
updates. Try changing video adapter.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory
options such a caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove
or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced
Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode

Technical information:

Stop: 0x000000008E ( … did not get the other STOP threads, but can return to
machine tomorrow and get if makes a difference)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk 97

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

4) I use F8 upon restart and select “last good Config†= doesn’t work
5) Go back in SAFE MODE – and in Devices deleted all drivers associated with
USB ports. = doesn’t work (I may not have done everything I could/should here
vis-à-vis uninstalling potentially problematic drivers. What steps should I
have taken)
6) I eventually Rollback/Restore from Feb 2007 backup point and am able to
launch. I have automatic updates and upon shut down Windows updates 19 new
updates
7) I try launching again and same problem BSOD, Memory dump.
8) Oddly when I go back in and log-on under a different User (same machine)
I do not have the problem -- BSOD, Memory dump. What is that tells us?
9) I reload drivers (Windows does automatically), but now anytime I put in
USB memory stick, USB to printer or other – system tells me it can not
recognize USB Device – a runs me through a Microsoft Validation schema. Now
importantly when I do this on a separate laptop running XP PRO I do not have
this problem and can easily read devices and not run through Microsoft
Validation schema.

Possible culprits:

If I recall correctly this memory dump BSOD of death happened about after I
had connected a canon scanner to an IdotConnect 4 port USB hub to the
misbehaving computer. I assume the IdotConnect4 4 port USB hub drivers are
loaded from its chipset. Other then USB connections within Devices where
would I look to see what drivers actually loaded and when?

Why wouldn’t the Rollback/Restore from Feb 2007 – continue to work as it did
the first time? Is there a potential problem with 19 automatic Windows
updates between Feb 2007 – April 2007 ?

Thx! z

Hi, Mark --

re: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED ?

I do not remember seeing this error?

In run "Verifier.exe " from the command line and within Driver Verifier
Manager I select "Display information about the currently verified drivers"
and I see:

SETTINGS:

Enabled? = No

Test Type

Special pool checking
Pool tracking
Force IRQL checking
I/O verification
Enhanced I/O verification
Deadlock Detection
DMA checking
Low resources simulation

DRIVERS:

None in window

Am I suppose to use CHANGE OR ADD BUTTONS?

What am I looking for exactly? And once found what are the steps I should be
taking.

re: BIOS_given that I am able to go in under different user with BSOD, does
BIOS seem like a possible issue? What do you think about the screen
instructions to ...
Thx Mark! - z

Specifics:

You have omitted some of the most important information regarding this
error, specifically the 4 parameter values which follow the STOP code.
In your instance the value in parameter 1 will idenfity the specific
type of exception that was not handled, and parameter 2 will be the
memory address at which the exception occurred.

This particular error is most often associated with hardware
compatibility or device driver issues.

Good luck

When you didn't the name of the driver that is not loading, you pretty much
got everything out of verifier you arre going to get without a full scall
debugging effort (including the windows code ;)) What I was hoping for was an
indicator of exactly what driver we might make a try at upgrading or maybe
just getting a fresh copy to try. In your case, since you are not getting any
driver name, upgrading the BIOS is probably worth the trouble.
