Media player not being recognized for links. Wha?

Ever since buying my new computer with Vista, I can't watch video links. For
example, when I click on the video news links on cnn.com, I get a window
saying Windows Media Player is not detected, and I'm directed to manually
download the plug-in. But I do have WMP - the newest version is on my
computer, and I've used it. But no matter what I do, I can't get it to be
recognized for links. I have resorted to opening RealPlayer and going to the
site on there, and then opening the link in RealPlayer.

Is this yet another Vista peccadillo, or is there something I should be
doing to fix this annoying problem?

I primarily use Firefox, not IE. But I just checked in IE, and it is enabled,
and video links work fine in IE. When I'm in Firefox, I get a new window
opened saying that no Media Player is detected. When I click the button to
Get The Player, it takes me to the Microsoft Download Center to download WMP
11 for XP.

Is there something in Firefox that I should be enabling that I might have
missed? Shouldn't it be automatically detected?

Ah, that's a good clarification then.

Since Firefox doesn't support ActiveX by default, and the 1998 WMP plug-in
for Netscape Navigator 3.0 is ... from 1998 and no longer supported (to my
knowledge), I believe you would need at this time to use the ActiveX Plug-in
for Firefox--

if you wanted this to work.

Heh. Sorry about that - because I only use Firefox, it's hard to remember
that maybe not everybody *knows* that! :)

I didn't realize that just because I have the player, I might not also have
the correct plug-ins for it to run correctly. The link you provided gave me
all the info I needed, and I've downloaded and restarted and downloaded some
more, and restarted again, and hallelujah! I can now watch the CNN videos in
Firefox!

Thanks for your help, zachd!

IE Tab add-on for Firefox is extremely helpful in all kinds of
situations.

Having the same problem with not being able to view wmv files in sties. I do
have the addon enabled. where ever there should be a video i get a box area
with a x in the upper right corner of the box. Use to work fine and then
about 3 weeks ago it just stopped.

What changed three weeks ago on your system? Did you add or remove any
software around that time?

If you to WMP's Tools:Options menus, what options do you get? I'm guessing
that you are only going to see "Burn" here....

Nothing else changed except for this. I have all the nomal tabs when I go
to options in wmp

Did you have SatelliteTVforPC on this machine at some point?

What is the value for-
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, CLSID\{6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6}
\InprocServer32
?

Does WMP show up as Enabled in IE's Tools:Manage Add-ons ?

Does
http://zachd.com/pss/allbrowser.htm
properly show WMP for you?

Nope never had that. I did find that if I used IE& 64 bit everything was
fine(no flash though) also napster kept telling me I did not meet the min
reg of wmp 7. I backed everything up and formatted and reinstalled Vista and
everything is ok now.
