Media Player in Windows (Not Windows Media Player) & MPEG playback

There seems to be very little info about Media PLayer (MP)
(Mplat32.EXE) as opposed to Windows Media Player (WMP)

I want to embed MPEG into PowerPoint and some MPEG-4
files work fine while many most MPEG-2 files simply come
up with a black hole where the video should be.

MP is the player Windows uses to run videos in MSPP, and
it won't run them either. HOWEVER, WMP runs them just
fine.

Any ideas on how to get the MP to run MPEG-2 files?
