Windows Media Player slows system to a stand still

Greetings All, I have a Windows XP SP2 system running Media Player 11.
WMP will play MP3 files with no problem however when I attempt to play
MPG or MPEG files the system slows almost to a stand still, (100% CPU
utilization). If I do a CTL-ALT-DEL, and touch nothing else the WMP
starts to play in the background (only starts) but the instant I
attempt to bring WMP to the front or close the task manager, the
problem still exists. I have run Spybot, Adaware, McAfee Antivrus and
Disk Defrag multiple times with no changes. Since my four children
share this system, this is creating some real problems. Any suggestions
would be welcome. I have no idea where to go from here. Thanks!

Has it ever worked well? What is the malware status of the computer and how
do you check for that?

There is a windows media player newsgroup. I suggest you post there too,
maybe someone there has seen this before.

Thanks for the post! Indeed it did at one time work very well. As my
original post mentioned, the system is shared by my four children and I
assume at one point, one of them ventured somewhere they should not
have. I do not have any "malware" response and will look into that over
the weekend. Also, I will post this in the WMP Newsgroup as well.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

Ok good luck. I would start with a thorough check for malware.
