How can I stop Windows Media Player from starting
automatically when I start my system? I have Windows XP
and this just started happening today. Nothing is in my
startup folder and don't know how to stop this. It
appears that the media player is trying to connect to a
website as soon as it starts.

Hi Brian,

Start/run msinfo32, expand the software environment and click on the startup
programs. Look for a line referring to WMP *or* to a media file (this can
cause that as well). Make note of where it is loading from, this is where
you will need to go to disable (fix) it. Please post back with the startup
location if you are unsure of how to proceed.

I see two entries for a Windows Media Player file.
Locations are listed below but I don't know if this would
is normal.

iedll c:\program files\windows media player\iedll.exe
loader c:\program fiels\windows media player\wmplayer.exe

Is it either of these?

Thanks for you quick response.

Hi,

You have a bigger problem. Iedll.exe is part of a browser hijacker, see the
removal steps here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/darnit_2.htm#iedll

I have a feeling that cleaning that off should resolve the issue.
