ME to XP Home Unsupported Operating System Version Error

I am trying to upgrade a HP Pavillion 6835 (800MHz Celeron, 320Mb RAM) from
Win ME to Win XP Home with an Upgrade version of XP SP2. When setup checks
compatibilitly, it comes back with an Unsupported Operating System Version
error. The version of Windows running is not supported. Setup can only
upgrade official releases. Setup will now exit. The ME version is 4.9.3000.
The computer is all original until I added RAM (originally 128Mb). Any ideas
anyone?

Thanks,
