Are you ONLY upgrading, or are you trying to use the "Clean Install" option?
When you say you Re-installed ME: using Recovery disks.
Using Recovery disks as the "Qualifying Media", I don't believe XP Upgrade
"clean install" can be done. You have to choose the "Upgrade" option, it
seems.
See this?
(quote)One of the biggest questions I've received about the Upgrade
versions of XP is whether they can be used to perform a clean install, where
the hard drive of an existing PC is wiped out, and XP is installed from
scratch. Yes, you can do this. However, at some point during Setup, XP will
ask you to insert a qualifying media to ensure that you qualify to use the
upgrade in this manner. This must be a retail Windows 98, 98 SE, Millennium
Edition (Me), NT 4.0, or 2000 CD-ROM, Upgrade or Full version. It cannot be a
rescue CD that you got from a PC maker.(end quote)

[You don't say at what point you get the Error message.]

With ME installed, boot to xp cd,select install xp,see what options you get,
im sure this works & a clean xp install is available. However,ME must be
installed.otherwise,you upgrade from windows explorer.Also,if xp fails,you
need to reinstall ME first, then boot to xp cd....

1. You didn't need to reinstall ME from the original Dell disk. Since
that disk is the actual operating system (Dell didn't make Restore Disks
then but provided a real operating system disk), you could do a clean
install with it. XP's installation routine will ask for qualifying media
and you simply put your ME disk in at that time.

2. However, you mention that you have "5GB free" and I assume that by
that you mean you have 5GB space on your hard drive. This is not enough
room to install XP and you will definitely need to do a clean install.
Please refer to the clean install instructions below to make sure you
are doing this correctly. I strongly suggest you delete all partitions
and create one new single partition for XP during the installation process.

What you will need on-hand

3. Is this a retail copy of XP Pro or one that someone gave you? If the
latter and it is a burned copy, this may be the reason you are having
difficulties.

4. You also didn't mention the total size of your hard drive. I don't
suggest installing XP on a drive smaller than 30GB and that would be
pushing it if you want to install a lot of programs such as MS Office, etc.
