mdata.dat error

One of our Senior Group here is having trouble with her XP Home computer,
she is continually getting the mdata.dat error message. I had one of our
Buddies visit her and this is what he has reported back.

" I did look at msconfig. today (in the Start-Up List) and, when I deleted
the whole lot of them, that mdata.dat error message was gone!!
However, when I enabled all the Start-Up items once more WITH THE EXCEPTION
OF the optical mouse
(which is cable-connected !!!), there was no message UNTIL I rebooted the
machine.....then the mouse was
automatically restored in msconfig/start-up !! Explain that one to me, if
you have the time! (Before that, I
uninstalled the mouse and then let her computer find it again and accept
it."

Can anyone please offer a suggestion as to how this error message can be
overcome please.

The application doesn't know that it was disabled in msconfig, so the
application creates a new startup in the registry. If you want to disable
an application from starting at boot, do it from within that application.
