McAfee VirusScan v4.5.1 problems after XPSP2 installation

I have McAfee VirusScan v4.5.1 which keeps crashing since I installed XPSP2
the message I get is “NT On-Access Scanner service. has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.†“ I thought before
release, these issues may have been cleared, as I reported these in the beta
release using the “file a bug†app.

Any ideas …….anybody………please

It's been a little while since I've worked with
VirusScan, but I know that VS 4.5.1 hasn't been the
current version for more than a year now. Perhaps it's
time for an upgrade to 7.0. Or, look for updates to VS
4.5.1. There was at least one service pack for it, and I
have an idea in my head that the service pack had
something to do with XP compatibility.

Bottom line: Check with NAI on compatibility and
update/upgrade.

I know this is little help, but I'm running 4.5.1 on my desktop with SP2
and I don't have that issue. Have you applied the latest superdat and made
sure the engine along with the defs are up to date. They should be Engine:
4.3.20 and the dats should be 4.0.4385.

You can get the latest full superdat at
ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/superdat/intel/.

BTW: I've seen this error on all NT based MS platforms for no apparent
reason. In most cases I've either updated with the latest superdat or
reinstalled.

These are the steps that need to be done with this error message:

1. Right-click 'My computer' and click 'Manage'.
2. Double-click 'Services and Applications'.
3. Highlight 'Services' and maximize the window.
4. Double-click the 'McShield' service.
5. Go to the Recovery tab.
6. Select 'Restart the Service' on 'First Failure' and click ok.
7. Close the computer management window.
8. Restart the computer.

Past this:
Here are the steps that need to be done:

1. Check for a Virus.
2. Check for another Anti-Virus program conflicting.
3. Go through an uninstall, removing left over files, and than do a clean
install.
4. Check for any Chinese/Japanese software installed.
5. Check to see what language the OS is set to and what language of McAfee
VirusScan.
