Maximised windows

Does anyone know how to change the default so that when you open an
application, the window is already maximized? I just replaced my monitor with
an LCD with a screen resolution of 1440 x 900 and all windows open about
half-size of the actual screen.

Right click the shortcut, properties and on the shortcut tab, Run box:
select maximized. For a link that opens less than maximized, with only one
window open, left click the edges of the window and draw them out to the
maximum size. Hold down the ctrl key and click the X to close the window.
