Windows does not show in 1200x1600 on a 22" monitor

Win XP SP2.
I have a 22" LCD monitor that is attached as an external monitor to my
laptop. Until recently it displayed
a resolution of 1200 x 1600. A recent restart changed that and now 1200 x
1600 requires the screen to scroll (by pushing the cursor against the edge
of the screen). Quite annoying.

The monitor displayed 1200 x 1600 correctly when attached to another laptop
with similar configuration.

How do I return to the previous situation where the actual screen of the LCD
displayed 1600x1200 within the whole screen without scrolling?

Thanks,
Erik

Look through the Display Properties, Settings tab. If there are two
slides align them to the same resolution so panning won't be necessary.
Click the "Advanced" button, Adapter and possibly other tabs related
to the graphics card, for any other options related to panning.

A few things to try:

1) Go to the Display Properties, change the resolution back to what you want
click apply/OK. If necessary, readjust it to another resoultion setting,
apply/Ok and then readjust it back to the setting you want to see if that
corrects the setting.

2) There might be a utility that has monitor/display settings that that
will reset the display, e.g. Nvidia video/graphics cards etc often come with
such utilities (as would many other brands of cards), so the laptop may have
come with such a utility. Such utilities are similar to the basic Display
Properties in Windows, but with functionality specific to the particular
graphics hardware.

3) Perhaps try adjusting the settings on the monitor itself (i.e.resetting
the width and height of the display using the monitor's buttons may bring
the display back into the bounds of the physical monitor and eliminate the
need to scroll). Most monitors these days have an "auto adjust" mode that
makes the image fit the screen.

5) If it has worked previously that pretty much rules out the question of
the laptop/graphics hardware supporting the monitor, but perhaps a display
driver update would help?

6) Another possiblility is that a recent Windows update or something else is
causing this. Have you installed any Windows updates, or any other major
modifications i.e. software installation, or hardware drivers?

7) Have you tried a System Restore to see if it returns the functionality
you're after? If you can restore to a date that you know the monitor was
working correctly at, this may alleviate the problem.

Please run through these things and see if any make a difference, and report
back.
