I have a 19" widescreen monitor currently set to 1440 x 900 resolution.
Is this the best resolution i can get? When I try to change it in
control panel stuff goes off the screen or stuff all looks squashed. My
graphics card lets me specifically type in any resolution I want - what
better resolutions could I have?
Many thanks in advance.
LCD displays have one specific resolution that they are designed to
work best with so you need to determine this from the documentation
that came with the monitor.
For example a client of mine recently purchased a Gateway widescreen
display which has a design resolution of 1680 x 1050. It took a lot
of searching to find a video card that would provide that output, but
one we had that install the monitor is really terrific.
Your 1440 x 900 setting is a 16:10 apsect setting, and some wide LCDs
are based on 16:9 which in your case would be 1440 x 810 (if the card
supports that).
But check the monitor specs first and be prepared to shop around for
the right video card to work with it.
One other thing you might try is to use Clear Type smoothing. Use
Control Panel - Display - Appearance - Effects and choose Clear Type
from the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts"
drop-down list.
Good luck
