In my Control Panel, the monitor resolution settings only go as high
as 1280. But most monitors today have a recommended resolution of
1440.

If I wanted to get a monitor like that, how would I set Windows XP to
that resolution?

It's showing the resolution that is supported by your current monitor,
if you were to get one that supports that high of resolution then XP
would detect it and for that you would have that option for that kind of
resolution.

You may not be able to. The maximum resolution is dependent on the physical
hardware (the video card or chip) and the driver for it.

You need to go to the manufacturer of the video card and download and
install the latest driver for the card or chip you have in the computer.
You can then see what the maximum resolution you can have.

I have an older Sony system that maxed out at 1280 X 1024 but would not do
any 16:9 resolutions. I downloaded the latest driver for the video card and
then was able to go all way up to the maximum 16:9 needed for the 22" WS
monitor I wanted to install.

Doesn't anyone still make 19" monitors with 1280 res? At Best Buy,
they have about 15 monitors and they were all 19" with 1440 res.

That would be their maximum resolution. You should be able to run it
at 1280 if that's what you want.

Richard, you are correct when you state the recommended resolution (also
called the native resolution) of LCD monitors is important. It is where you
get the best image.

For 19" 4:3 monitors see

Their online store shows many 19 inch standard screen systems

(I'm not connected to Viewsonic but have always had good luck with their
monitors.)

Acer makes V193B which seems to be a good system monitor.

Samsung makes the 940BE or 940T model.

In simple terms, search on your favorite online electronics store for 1280 X
1024 LCD 19" and you will find many different manufacturers selling them.

By replacing the computer's video adapter with one capable of
supporting the desired resolution(s).
