Master Information File

Hello, Win XP Home

Several months ago I disabled many of my "Services" and managed to disable
33 altogether with no ill side effects until today. I noticed that I had
one problem that I believe may be related to one of the services I
disabled.

I discovered that within Add/Remove programs, the Add/Remove Windows
Components option is not allowing access to it. When I click on it I get
the message "setup was unable to load the master information file" and
after clicking away that box the box underneath it says "the application
could not be initialized".

Could someone tell me if this is related to a service that was disabled,
and if it is which one it is.

Thanks,

Alt

Try extracting a new copy of Sysoc.inf file from Windows XP CD-ROM

1. Insert the Windows XP CD in the drive.
2. Click Start/Run and type CMD
3. In the Command Prompt, type this line:
4. expand X:\i386\sysoc.in_ -r c:\windows\inf

Where X:\ is your CD-ROM drive letter. The above assumes that Windows is
installed in C:\ drive.

Ramesh,

I did what you suggested and it worked to get me past the message I listed
above but then another error appeared and I was still unable to access
Add/Remove Windows Components.

The new message is "setup was unable to open information file wbemoc.inf"
and it also gives me an error code of :
0x2 at line 2088999411

Alt,
Extract a new copy of wbemoc.inf in a similar way.

Ramesh,

I extracted the copy of wbemoc.inf the same way you asked me to extract
sysoc.inf and also a few others like fxsocm.inf,
netoc.inf, and iis.inf. Now I am not allowed to extract one that I need
too named comnt5.inf , the message I get at the command prompt is "cannot
open input file: d:\i386\comnt5.in_.

So, when I attempt to open Add/Remove Windows components now, the first
window I get is one telling me that "installation library for component
fax could not be initialized" and then the message appears "setup ws
unable to open information file comnt5.inf but I can't extract this one
from the command prompt.

Ramesh,

I am still having that problem. Do you have anymore advice that may help?

Ramesh,

Thank you for the help. I did not get it open, but I did get closer to
where I need to be. For now, I am not going to worry about it anyway
because I had everything set like I wanted it in Add/Remove Windows
Components before I was unable to access it. I am sure I will run into
some trouble with the problem one day though and I will just worry about
it then I guess.
