Manually Start ScreenSaver

I know that the ScreenSaver can be previewed through the Display option
within Control Panel. That isn't what I want.

I want to be able to manually start the screensaver whenever I leave my
desk. I have the re-start - after the screensaver has come on - password
protected, so by having being able to manually start the screensaver I'm
manually locking off my computer without shutting down any programs.

If there isn't anyway to manually start the screensaver, does anybody know
of a little bit of Freeware that will do the same or another way of locking
my computer without closing down programs.

TIA

I remember wanting to do this with Win 95 but forgot how I solved
it. I may have just put up with the PITA of a manual start. Wish I
could help, it's an interesting issue you have here.

Although there should be tools around starting the screen saver manually
*with* password protection, [WinKey]+[L] may suit your needs as well.

You can start a screensaver like any other EXE--make a shortcut to the .scr
file, type its name in the Start|Run dialog box, etc. I'm not sure it'll
automatically inherit whatever options you've set up though (like prompting
for password). For that, you may have have better luck looking into calling
whatever API makes the screensaver kick in instead--I'm pretty sure *that*
will use the settings you've configured.

I can't recall the details off the top of my head, but google for rundll32
and screensaver.

You should be able to just create a shortcut to you scr file. You can also
put the computer into a locked mode by creating a shortcut and in the target
put %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
