Mandatory user profile problem

B

Barry Koopersmith

I have about 80 users setup to use one of seven mandatory
user profiles stored on a directory on a Windows 2000
server. About five users intermittently get the following
error and as a result, the profile is not copied to their
workstation when they log in. Other users who use the same
profile never get the error. When this happens, a window
pops up with the below message.

It looks like the mandatory user profile system is having
a problem copying something that is too long but the path
it is copying from, "Local Settings" (and below) does not
exist in the source it is copying from.

The exact file path that it is trying to copy in each case
varies but "Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5" is always the same (the balance below
that varies). A temporary fix is to go to "Control Panel-
Internet Options" and to select "Delete Files" and "Delete
Cookies" (perhaps "Delete Files" would be enough). If the
user then logs out and logs in, he gets the mandatory user
profile without a problem. It then works the rest of the
day regardless of how many times the users logs in or
reboots the computer. The problem may come back again the
next day or a few days later.

This happens (so far) with 5 of the 80 users since I setup
each user in Active Directory to use the mandatory user
profile about five months ago.

What is causing this problem, where is it getting
the "Local Settings" data from (since it is not in the
profile path) and what can I do to prevent it from
happening?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Hello Barry,

Thank you for your patience.

I have performed some tests on my lab machines and would like to suggest
that we check the following:

1. Please check if the server side profile
(\\Gacnyw2k1\Profiles\gactech_hermetic\) to see if the "Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files" folder contains the file with the
mentioned long file name. Generally this folder is used to keep IE cache
and can be safely removed.

2. Please go to the problematic client and check if the local cache of the
profile (C:\Documents and Settings\tfinley) to see if the "Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files" folder contains the file with the
mentioned long file name.

Generally, I suspected that the problem should be related to the local
cache of the profile due to the following reasons:

- The problem only occurs on 5 clients
- The changes will not be saved to the profile location of the mandatory
profiles.

Therefore, let's use the following methods to see if the problem can be
resolved:

Method 1:
--------------

If the file with the long file name exists in the local profile cache
(C:\Documents and Settings\tfinley):

- Backup the profiles.
- Delete the "Temporary Internet Files" and "History" folders. (Note: The
"Local Settings" folder is a hidden folder.)

Method 2:
--------------

Try the following steps to enable the "Delete cached copies of roaming
profiles" Group Policy.

- Run gpedit.msc on the problematic machine.
- Navigate to "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\Logon".
- Double click the Delete Cached Copies of roaming profiles policy and
enable it.
- Reboot the computer and log with the domain user account.

You can also change this setting by using a domain group policy object.

Please let me know if these take care of the problem. Thanks and have a
great day!

Thank you for your response.

As I indicated in my original problem description, the "Local Settings" folder does not exist in the source it is copying from (the server side profile) so I don’t know where these files are being copied from.

If this problem ever happens again, I will check to see if the local cache of the profile contains the file with the long file name.

As I also indicated in my original problem description, your “Method 1†solution is what I was already doing (deleting "Temporary Internet Files") but that only makes the problem disappear for that day and for a few days afterward until it comes back again.

I have now implemented your “Method 2†solution by adding a group policy to “Delete cached copies of roaming profiles†to the Organizational Unit in Active Directory that contains all the computer names. I verified that when any user logs out who is configured to use a “roaming profileâ€, his user profile on the local computer is deleted.

Since this problem only happens to a few users and since the problem sometimes does not occur for days or weeks for a given user, I will have to wait for a few weeks to be sure that the problem is resolved. Since the temporary fix of deleting "Temporary Internet Files" always works and this new procedure of automatically deleting the local copy of the profile includes deleting the "Temporary Internet Files" (which are contained in that directory structure), it seems likely that this problem will not recur.

I would be interested to know where that long "Temporary Internet†filename was being copied from since it did not originate from the server side profile.

Hello,

Thank you for your update.

Yes, I believe the problem should be related to the local cache of the
profile, and I suspected it is very likely created when the user surfs the
Internet.

During the logon process of a user using a roaming profile, the following
happens in the background:

1. The user logs on.

2. The path to the users roaming profile is retrieved from the user object
on the Domain Controller.

3. Windows checks to see if a profile exists in the roaming path, if no
profile exists a folder is created.

4. Windows checks the list of user profiles located in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
to get the path to the user's locally cached profile if it exists.

5. The contents of the local cached profile are compared with the copy of
the profile on the server, and the two profiles are merged.

6. The user's registry hive (NTUSER.DAT or NTUSER.MAN) is mapped to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER portion of the registry.

7. The users %userprofile% environment variable is updated with the value
of the local profile folder

8. The user can then run applications and edit documents as normal. When
the user logs off, the local profile is copied to the path configured by
the administrator. If a profile already exists on the server, the local
profile is merged with the server copy.

In this case, the local cache confilicts with the server side profile and
causes this problem when merging the local cache and the server side
profile in Step 5.

The second method (enabling the policy to delete the local copy of the
profile) cleans the local profile cache and will take care of this problem.

Let's keep monitoring this fold for several more days and check if the
problem is completely resolved. If it comes backs again, please feel free
to post back here and I will be happy to perform further analysis.

Thank you for your time and efforts, and have a great day!

Joe Wu

|user profiles stored on a directory on a Windows 2000
|
|
|
|
|
