I right click with my mouse, and then on new. But there's
no zip file option. Additionally, there's an option for a
file type for a program I uninstalled ages ago! any help
out there?

To make the ZIP (Compressed folder) appear in the shell new menu:
Click Start | Run | Type "regsvr32 zipfldr"

The additional entries may be removed using TweakUI (download from
Microsoft)
or edit the registry manually and remove the ShellNew key for that filetype.

Or you could download WinZip from download.com and with one click
create a zip file. AND it automatically opens any zip file you download.
Beats fooling around with XP. :-)
