Making Discs Compatible

In My Computer I right click on my recorder drive but the drop down menu does
not include 'Make Compatible'

Please bear with me while I get the hang of replying to you. I am trying to
make a DVD onto which I have downloaded some photos, readable by another
DVD player.

OK. You have a DVD with photos on it.
You play this DVD to your TV with a DVD player and this works fine.
You try it with another DVD player, but it does not work.
I would look at the type of disk you are using and the type your player can
play.
There are four types of disks
DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
Some DVD players can play all, some only -R and -RW and some only +Rand +RW
So look at the type of disk you used for the copying and see if it is
compatible with the DVD player you are trying to use.

The second problem I would look for is if you made some cover label for the
disk. Some players are more finicky than others and may not read this disk.

Perhaps the OP remembers the old DirectCD (formerly a component of EasyCD
Creator). What you could do with a disk depended on how you closed it.
One could change the ability to add files to a CD through a command to
DirectCD.

Nowadays, we use Drag to Disk, and I can't find the comparable command in my
manual. Perhaps, though, I am not looking hard enough.

There still remain various ways to close the disk. You have a choice of
conditions that you expect the disk to run. If, for example, you choose the
option
to create a disk which will run on any machine, then Drag to Disk takes long
enough in the eject procedure to accomplish the task. If, however, you
choose the option to
run only on computers with Drag to Disk (which includes all TV DVD players),
then Drag to Disk closes the disk much faster.

Perhaps, the OP selected an inappropriate close mechanism. There doesn't
seem to be a way to change the disk outside of creating another disk.

player it does not say that it cannot play +RW but does say it cannot play
DVD-R discs.
Elsewhere it does say that it cannot play discs recorded in any colour
system other than PAL/NTSC. Could this be the reason it won't play?

Probably not
By the way, ignore what I said about CDs. DVD+-R and DVD+-RW do not need
any special ejection conditions.
DVD players can be quite hard to use. The one of my computer will not
record on DVD-R or DVD-RW.

PAL is simply the color system use in Europe and NTSC is used in the US etc.
I don't think the problem is there, since you can play this DVD-RW disk in
another DVD player.
The fact that it cannot play -R is fine, it just means you need to use +R
disks. "Normally" a + DVD player "should" be able to read +R as well as +RW.
But if the manual says it can read a +R and does not mention +RW then I
would suspect that this is the problem and would try a DVD+R disk.

Guess who has egg on their face? I omitted to tell you that I had burned
the DVD using Picassa photo programme from Google. Looking into it more
deeply I see that it says that DVDs produced this way cannot be played on a
TV DVD - only through another PC. Sorry to have taken up your time and many
thanks anyway.

Don't worry about it! You need Nero or Roxio to produce a DVD readable by a
DVD player.
