make thumbs.db go away

A

Ann

When I copy from one personal folder with photos and html
pages to my CDRW, it is copying too thumbs.db, but I
don't see this in my folder that I am copying from. If
it's there, it is hidden and I don't know where it came
from. I already checked not to cache the thumbnails in
the folder options. I already selected to have all the
hidden folders shown. You can't see this in my folder and
when it's copied, it appears in the one that it is copied
in.

Confusing enough?

Thanks,
Ann

Also turn off Hide Protected Files which is underneath the Show Hidden Files settings. Do Not Cache.. does not delete thumbs.db, just stops making new ones..

HIde protected files was already turned off. I don't
understand why I can't see it in the folder that I am
copying from and yet when the contents of the folder gets
copied onto my CDRW, the thumbs.db shows up. Why can't I
see it in the original folder that I created and has my
jpg. photos and html pages? When I do search / files and
folders/ for thumbs.db, nothing comes up, yet it is
hidden somewhere in my folders.

I don't burn pictures to CDs. But maybe it's from the staging area rather than original folder. When you send files to CD they get copied to a folder on your hard disk, it from there they go to the CD.

Ann, you apparently have WinXP, in which there is a separate setting which
must be turned off to see the thumbs.db (and desktop.ini, for that matter)
in your folders. Below the listing for "Show hidden files and folders" is
one that says "Hide protected operating system files". You need to uncheck
that to see the thumbs.db files on your hard drive. I don't recommend it,
BTW, unless you want to do it just long enough to search for them to
delete them.

Hope this helps, and, as always, your mileage may vary,

The photos in my original folder, were not put there
through my CD. I scanned the photos and saved them in a
folder. I copied the folder into a CDRW disk. The
thumbs.db also shows up in the CDRW being copied from my
folder on my hard drive to the folder in my CDRW. What's
strange is that I don't see the thumbs.db in my folder on
my hard drive, but it shows that it is being copied to my
CDRW folder.

I didn't realize there was something separate that I had
to uncheck to see the operating system files. When I did
this, I saw the thumbs.db. Can I just delete them? How
did they show up in my folder anyway?

Thanks,
Ann

Yes, and no...
They are there because, by default, WinXP creates them to store thumbnail
images of pics to display in Explorer. You can turn this off... Go back to
folder options and the view tab, and just above the show hidden files part
there will be one that says "Do not cache thumbnails". Check it, Ok out,
close everything, and restart. Note that when opening a folder in Explorer
that contains pics, the folder will take longer to open, as WinXP will
have to recreate the thumbnails each time.
Once you have done this, then you can search for and delete the Thumbs.db
files on your HD.
However, I would probably not do all that, I find it easier to simply look
for the Thumbs.db and/or Desktop.ini files in the list of what I am
putting on a CD, and remove them manually from there each time.

Hope this helps, and, as always, your mileage may vary,
