Thumbs.db

Guest

When I transfer a large number of folders with media files in them,
periodically a message comes up about deleting thumbs.db. If I am away
from the computer, it sits with this message box open and no transfers
occuring until I hit the yes to all button. I WANT TO KILL THIS
INQUIRY!!!!!!

When I transfer files I just want it to go to completion. It is bad
enough that it hangs on "such and such folder cannot be moved ( or
deleted or something else) because it is not empty". Sometimes it is
empty and sometimes I have to move something to delete it.

I just want these transfers to go to completion without having to
babysit them. DOS had some useful utilities for this and I would like
to have them back.

Any ideas how to stop this pesky thumbs.db message from coming up and
just letting the transfer go without hanging??

Thanks for the help.

Always view your folders in list, details, tiles or icon views. Don't
use thumbnail view.

In Folder Option, re-check the option to "Hide protected operating system
files." With that enabled, thumbs.db gets moved with no prompt. Without it
enabled, you don't get the prompt and thumbs.db is still moved. Even though
I abhor hiding *anything*, I leave this one enabled for just this reason.

You could also Copy the files & folders, then delete them when the Copy is
finished. You'll still get the prompt, but it will be almost immediate.

Damn, Gary, did you finally get XP? :)

Been using it almost exclusively since beta. I stayed in 98 groups because
somebody needed to and because I developed an illness that includes a
significant amount of short-term amnesia. Made supporting XP kinda
difficult, but the 98 stuff was already well ingrained. New medication
regimes have improved my memory substantially, 98 groups are moribund, so I
figured I'd dip my toes here.

Still, I can't stand XP's default menus and get frustrated trying to tell
people how to do things on a machine that doesn't use Classic settings.
Lastly, I didn't need the grief (read "lots of trolls") that comes with
participating in an NG for the latest MS general purpose OS. I lived through
that once with 98. I'll stick with "legacy" support from now on.

Aw come on Gary, join in the fun at microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
(et al). You've already missed the initial wave of squawk, "Get a Mac, Get
a Mac" postings. What's left is the boring "MS sucks and long live Linux /
Ubuntu" contingent.

It does seem some of the Vista groups' trolls have migrated here lately. A
few new faces, while others have done the circuit from here, to there, and
back again. Hmm, maybe the word's out you have arrived?

Of course you also seem to have met a couple of our own resident
sweethearts.

Welcome. :)

Nope, ain't gonna do more than lurk there, and only when I'm REALLY bored,

I noticed that. Sure, go ahead and pin it on me. As the only male in a
family of five, I'm used to it!

Trying not to respond, but you know how it is. Been a while since my blocked
list got any new residents.

Thanks!

This seems to be the best advice anyone gave. You know your stuff. I
will give it a whirl and see how it goes. I have lots of media files
and don't use thumbnail views and when I have to juggle files to
increase capacity with new HDs, this always slows things way down.

Thanks for the advice and specific pointers.

I remember perusing this NG when it first started, back when I was active in
98. Boy have things *calmed down* here now comparatively! <g>
