Major prob with windows xp and modem

Hello,

I am running a Windows ME system with 256MB RAM and an AMD 1Ghz processor.
I wish to upgrade to Windows Xp and purchased the upgrade pack incl. Service
Pack 1. When attempting to install I received a report telling me that my
modem would be incompatible with Windows XP. Via Device Manager I was able
to download new drivers for my modem, but still I was met with the message
that it wouldn't be compatible with XP. I have a PCTEL Platinum V.90 modem.

I have searched for new drivers but haven't found the 'smoking gun' so to
speak. PCTEL have not been helpful either. My idea was to remove the
current driver, install an XP one and test to see if the install report
lists it as incompatible still. However, I need something to fall back on,
an ME driver. I'm uinsure whether an uninstall of the current driver will
remove it completely, therefore does anyone know an ME driver which is known
to work? I need the reassurance of having a back up copy so I can switch
drivers about to test them.

Can anyone offer any help with this predicament? I'm desparate to get rid
of ME, it's been woeful.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Interesting .
Sorry just talking to myself.
I had a similar problem with my scanner.
I even connected the scanner to another computer and networked the
two computers. No problems with that.,
But it is rather stuppid to have two computers running for what could
be done by one.
I removed the scanner software right down to the register entries.

I disabled "plug and play" in XP, restarted the computer and
installed the software manually. He presto the scanner worked and is
still working on my XP computer.
What XP was doing it was installing his own software for my scanner
and it was a real basic scanner software. In your case it mostlikely
has no software on the XPdisk and very conveniently tell you the modem
is not compatible.

Thanks

You did not specify if your modem was built-in to your motherboard or it
was an add-on card - but by being a PCTEL I can thin it was a PCI add-on.
Your option is that you want to do an upgrade instead of a full install.
That means you are limited to what you can do. My best advice is this:
remove the INF directory from XP to another location. Then remove your
modem via system settings. Reinstall. XP will look for the INF
directory and not find it. Then install the drivers you wish for your
modem that are XP compatible. After everything working OK - put INF back
where it belongs.

How about System Restore? If you create a restore point before you install
the XP driver you should be able to restore to that point afterwards if the
test is unsuccessful and carry on as before.
