Major IE6 problem

Michael

I use WinXP Home and IE 6. I also use Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite
Keyboard and Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (as of about a
month ago). I have a major problem happening several times a day
(unpredictable when): I hear clicking sounds from my Compaq Presario 2500
laptop speakers every once in a while (like a pop up ad would do, but no ad
appears), the top dark blue bar goes light blue (i.e., the window loses
focus), when I try scrolling using the mouse wheel the text size changes
like zooming in or out (implying that somehow the CTRL key thinks I have
pressed it, but I have not), the URL I am vewing dissapears and the previous
web page shows up in the window, text gets selected on the web page when I
just left click on it, characters that I try to enter in the text boxes of a
form page become capitalized or do not print at all, etc. There are no error
messages appearing that would help me troubleshoot it.

I have switched to a regular mouse with a cable, but the problem still
appears, which means it may not relate to the wireless functionality. I have
run all kinds of tools like Ad-aware, cwshredder, HijackThis, Norton
Antivirus, etc. but they find no virus or malware. However, the problem
continues.

I also noticed that occasionally a window pops up from IE with size about a
quarter of the screen, and attempts to go to a URL like http://e.rn11.com
but then it looks like it runs a file at system32 folder called shdoclc.dll
and then the window dissapears (problably adware related, and not sure it
relates to the major problem described in the previous paragraph).

Any hints/help in resolving this very annoying and time consuming problem
and issues described above are greately appreciated.

Thank you,
Michael

Michael,
The first thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

Thank you both for your replies. I went to the forums you recommended and I
used HJT to identify the issues and clean the system. I was told it had the
Pepper worm. No problem so far over the last 3 days, which is great news!

Any idea what the URL starting with http://e.rn11.com is for? The pop up
window has not come up again, but I was just wondering if anyone has seen
this before (ad server?)

Michael.

Michael,
Yes, "e.rn11.com" is a backdoor parasite installer ....
It usually installs "internet washer" [ugh!]

But if it existed you would have seen it in your HijackThis log.
All of those infections you had are targeted in my HOSTS file.
