Mail Problem

1. Tools - Accounts - Highlight the account I use for News Group
Properties - Windows Live ID. I check "Never Use....." after a
few restarts it will be set to "Prompt for Windows Live ID......"
Seems the registry has been reset. I use Avast antivirus. This
behavior just started a couple of days ago.

2. In lower left hand corner when in News Groups is sometimes
is blank instead of showing number of messages and number of
unread. Closing and re-opening Mail usually corrects this.

Make sure Avast's email scanning is off.
Are you using any other type of third party security
software such as anti-spyware? Some of these will
block writes to the registry.

It is off and no 3rd party utilities,,,,,, the "Change" is made only
after several reboots... very weird.... no unusual programs
running and many tests for virii and trojans come up blank.
It will change randomly and when it does change it does not
seem to change again on its own.

You say Avast's scanning is off. Check the headers of your last
newsgroup post (Ctrl-F3). The headers say

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 000767-3, 08/21/2007), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

That tells me scanning is not off.

Thanks ... that could be the over-all problem then. I also notice that
there is an Avast Icon that rotates a few seconds occasionally in
the System Tray "OTHER" than the normal one.... will check that
one out too...
