mail attachments converted to dat files

Whenever I get an attachment from a particular acquaintance it gets converted
by my mail program to a dat file, named winmailx.dat (x represents a number:
2, 3, 4, etc). I'm using Eudora 6.1 as my mail program and XP Home as my OS.
Can anyone tell me why and how to stop it?

Your friend is sending via Outlook in RTF format, which is not recognized by
Outlook Express. You need to tell them to send in HTML or Plain Text.
