let's try this again--be patient. I bought a Gateway refurb computer with
Vista on it. It had windows mail on it--I have DSL through verizon--with MSN
install--get most of my mail through msn/hotmail. We have tried to set up
the windows mail account using MSN, VERIZON,AOl,GMAIL,YAHOO, I have had the
IT guy from the local university come over and still cannot get it to work.
I cannot forward a page--email a page--click on a contact to mail. Any
ideas--had the same problems with Outlook express.
What if I uninstall Vista and put XP on the computer.

MSN mail, AOL mail, Yahoo (free) mail do not allow setup in either Outlook Express or Windows Mail. Never have.
GMAIL will configure and work just fine if you follow the direction on the the "Setting" page after you have an account and log-in.

Uninstalling Vista and putting XP on the computer most likely will give you problems too.
Is your Gateway computer compatible with XP (does it have XP drivers for the hardware)?
Since you could not get Outlook Express to work before, what make you think going to XP is going to help?

Gee, my car won't start...what if I remove the engine and hitch a horse up
to my front bumper?

So, when all this cannot stuff happens, do you get any error messages? Does
this IT guy from the university know Windows or is he strictly Unix/Linux?
Are you running an AntiVirus application setup to scan your email? What
other details about exactly what happens can you provide?

If my car doesn't start--I can fix that--if my computer doesn't work I can't
fix that
I will get an error message server error 530-544--does not recognize my
gmail account
The IT person is very good--we spent an hour trying different
configurations--even the gmail accounts didn't work followed complete
instructions
Thanks

Now we're getting somewhere. 530 errors are authentication problems. If
you've followed GMail's setup instructions, about the only other cause is an
AntiVirus application setup to scan email that has a problem. Are you
running one? Posting the entire error messages would also be a big help.

Make sure Avast is not scanning email.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee,Trend and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail
and Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of
Trend's anti-virus seems to be causing problems too. After uninstalling
McAfee run this tool:

McAfee was on computer when I got--90 day free trial--unisnstalled it and
installed Avast. Never had outlook on this computer--thought that is what it
was because it acted the same as computer at work.--new anme is Windows Mail
I found out. Never tried to install before--never had Vista either(don't
really care for it-buit will get used to it). Will check on email scanning
and see what gives--thank for all the help--will get back in touch soon

Wow, that university IT guy ought to be fired because he obviously
doesn't know his job basics.
Some of the services you mentioned will only work with webmail
(using your browser). Windows Mail does not handle webmail, only
POP and IMAP mail. MSN and Yahoo accounts are usually in the
webmail category, although there are exceptions.
Verizon, AOL, and Gmail will all work with Windows Mail, but only
if you use the exact settings as published by each provider.

Gmail: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86383

AOL: http://postmaster.aol.com/imap/express.html

Verizon: http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/

The newer Windows Live Mail will accommodate all MSN accounts.

G

Gary VanderMolen

You're not supposed to "try" different configurations, only the ONE
configuration spelled out by that particular provider.

Even trial versions of McAfee need to be followed up by using the
special removal tool after uninstalling:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

Chances are, you installed Avast antivirus using its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing the troublesome email scanning module.

POP and IMAP settign would not wrk for me--we followed Gmails instruction to
a tee. Did it twice with the same results. He knows what he is doing. Had
the IT guy from work try the Gmail setting and it still doesn't work.
Working with this program is like working on a 6.0 liter diesle Ford--very
frustrating and time consuming(pulling ones hair out.) Will do the uninstall
procedure this weekend and check back--leaving town to pick up new ambulance.
thanks

My mail accounts all work--just when I try to send a page to someone it will
not let me. Hope I am clear on this

"It will not let me" is not very definitive.
As a minimum we would need to see a verbatim copy of any error messages.
If no error message, describe the steps taken and what you see at the moment
of failure.
