Mad Scrolling Disease

I have WinXP Pro and it's been really good for 2+ years, though since this
morning it has developed a mad scrolling disease. When I first noticed it I
rebooted and it was fine for awhile. Now its practically none stop.

The behavior occurs only when a window with a scrollable area is engaged, I
can click on the desktop or on a window without a scrollable area and it will
stop. To try to click on a favorite website and it goes scrolling nuts.

My first thought was a malfunction with JAVA but I doubt that more and more
now. My second thought is it could possible be some malfunction with a
recently installed Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse since it's been a
bit qwerky since I installed them. I've preformed about every kind of scan I
can think of and nothing has been detected but I do fear the worst.

Can anyone give me some hope, or better still provide a solution? Thanks

Have you tried a new mouse?
it's possible the wheel mechanism is defective.

No, my belief is my brand new wireless MS mouse and keyboard should be XP
compatible. I did go into the WinXP Troubleshooter and started plodding
about and I'm not sure if I did something right or it just stopped madly
scrolling on its own.

What I did do was unchecked the accelerated vertical scrolling for the mouse
wheel, it is likely that that feature was acting up. I pray thats the end of
it, but I am busy backing up all my files :-(

I may be compatible but that does not mean it can't be defective at the same
time. Try another mouse.

I've had my m$ optical trackball & had the same disease in winxp pro & linux.

Got a new trackball (kensington) today for replacement & all's well.

m$ trackball is in the dumpster (have had the m$ trackball over 3 years).

Not necessarily. For example, had a new PC and new MS keyboard. When
installing XP, there is a point where you had to press F8, -as I recall-
to agree to the EULA.

F8 didn't work. Had to temporarily put in my ten dollar backup keyboard
to install XP.

For me, it always seems to be the mouse I'm using. Or should I say, wore
out :)
