LSASS and Services fail to "initialize properly" on startup

I've been getting this error message upon startup:

lsass.exe The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)
services.exe The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)

I cannot log in under Safe Mode, either. I think there was a windows update
last night (I found another computer had restarted itself stating that an
update was completed), for whatever that's worth.
