low volume from speakers

I just bought a new Dell Dimension 4600 with Win XP Home
and swapped it out with my old CPU, using the old monitor
and JBL speakers from my previous Compaq. I think I have
my speakers hooked up right, but for some reason I only
get faint sound coming out of them. Headphones the
volume is ok, but I've turned all the volumes in the
volume controls all the way up, and nothing's changed.
Anyone out there know what's up? The Dell has integrated
sound, not a separate device.
Thanks,
Roel

Hello,

Are the speakers ampilfied? I mean, do they have an
external power source that supply it with the energy to
produce loud sounds? If not, they depend on the
motherboard to supply the energy for you to hear the
sound. If they don't get enough juice from the
motherboard, then you won't hear much. I had the same
problem with my old speakers from another computer, and I
bought some amplified ones from Wal-Mart under $20.

Hi Ty,

No, they aren't amplified. They worked fine on my old PC
though, with a full range of volume. Perhaps the Dell
has a weaker juice supply from its motherboard? I'll
look into those amplified ones. Thanks!
