Low Memory Help

J

Jamonte

I just upgraded my computer to WinXP Pro, and ran into the
problem of not having enough memory. Although I've read
that 256MB of RAM is enough, apparently it was not. I
went up to 448MB yesterday and I'm still having problems.
What can I do to get my computer to work properly?

Your message is about virtual memory, not system RAM.

What's your pagefile size? Probably real low or zero. Increase it to 512MB
(and a max of 768MB), reboot and see if the problem goes away.

Check that xp is seeing all your memory. Properties of my computer or in
msinfo.exe.
Check you page file and set it to 512mb and see if that helps.

If I'm running at 448MB, and the lowest recommended size
is 670MB, what should I set it to?

670MB is fine. And your max should be about 768MB or so. Moving either
value up or down a couple of MB will not matter unless Windows is requesting
more. There would be a dialog box if this happens. If the recommended size
is too large, it just take up space; no harm with large HDs today. The only
other thing that might matter, is if the pagefile is badly fragmented. With
modern HD and their fast speeds, it doesn't matter if files are slightly
fragmented (not contiguous).

I've set it to those values, but I'm still running into
the same problems, which are the low memory error
messages, windows not showing up on the taskbar, and
certain programs that use Java not being able to be used.

When you set the virtual memory, you must be sure to click
the "set" button and then click OK. Otherwise the setting
doesn't take place.

To run Java programs you need to have Java installed, either
with SP1a or from Java.com
and you must set the permission for Java to run in
IE/Tools/Internet Options/advanced tab also in security tab.

Check out how your Virtual memory settings are set up. Read up at
www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm and use the tool linked from the 'How big
a page file' section to see how much actual use of the file is being
made. If it is not a significant amount (say 100MB or more) then more
RAM is not the answer to your problem - and it is not entirely clear
just what that is, or what workload you are putting on the machine
