Lots of services disappeared

After lending my PC to a visiting friend (more Mac than PC I am afraid) to
read his email lots of "service" things disappeared:
first "favorites" but also the "quick launch taskbar" also the Windows
Explorer is not longer listed in "programs" although, thanks G. I still have
access to "search". "Outlook Express" also disappeared from the start menu. I
can no longer "send to" , say "windows Explorer" to the Dektop, since only
hard disk appear now listed.
And under "document and settings" my account Name is no longer visible.
Still exists though since this is where Word Templates are located and it is
still accessible through Word.
Where is the magic wand to get all this restored?

Try a system restore to before your friend used the computer. Go to
Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore.
Choose a date right before the problems started.

I don't know if it will reset all the problems, or which ones it will
help with.

Sytem restore can be run from a cmd line. Click on Start, then run.
Type in (or copy and paste): c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Adjust the path as needed for your system.
 
Note to self: DO NOT LEND PC TO FRIENDS.

Start>Run cmd [enter]

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe [enter]

For future safe computing:
Set up a Guest account! That way, your friend(s) is/are limited in what they
can do, and what little they can change will not affect your account.

Not services, just selective options.

What was he using to read his email? Sounds as though that particular
reader became default (present to the eye or not).

For OE: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Then go to:
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

Check your settings here:

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll down to
URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit.

Under Application used to perform action it should read:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Set Outlook Express as default mail client - Start/Run and type in:
MSIMN.EXE /REG

as usual a comprehensive answer.
All worked with the restrui command except that the FAVORITES are still
gone and the desktop is also still missing from the QLaunch bar (easy to
resolve). FAVORITES SHOW UNDER ALL USER BUT NOT UNDER MY ACCOUNT.
ANSWERS TO OTHER POINTS BELOW.

BUT
I STILL HAVE NOT FOUND BACK MY OLDE FAVORITES, ALL GONE. HOW TO RESTORE
THIS. I DID NOT FIND IT IN YR KORNER.
 
How can you click on "Start" when the 'Start' button and Taskbar have
disappeared? So how can you then move on to anything else, such as 'Control
Panel'? My taskbar isn't just 'hidden' – it's GONE!
 
At least for now try using the Windows key. That usually brings up
the Start Menu. Also try grabbing the very bottom of the screen and
when you see a double arrow cursor drag it up. It may have been
dragged down accidentally. Or it may have been dragged to one side
of the screen or the top.

It may work, worth a try.

He could also try CTLR+ALT+DEL to bring up task manager, then choose File >
New Task and type explorer into the field.
